University of Michigan-Dearborn administrators recently implemented changes to several campus email groups that use “umd.umich.edu” addresses due to increased SPAM-related issues. The following changes will allow ITS to reduce staff time, hardware and software needed to support “umd.umich.edu” email groups:
- As of September 11, send access to the “everybody” email list is restricted to select people identified by senior officers and deans.
- A new email group is available through MCommunity that will allow anyone on campus to send messages to the campus community. This new email group is called email@example.com. This email list—which is not moderated—should be used for university-related business. All faculty and staff have been opted into this email group and have permission to send to this email group. You may opt out of this email group at https://mcommunity.umich.edu.
- Changes were made last week to the “all-faculty” and “all-staff” email groups that restrict send access to select people determined by the Provost’s Office and the Office of External Relations.
- Changes to the “forum” and “fyi” lists were made last month. The email addresses for these groups were changed to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com. These lists now are hosted in MCommunity. As a reminder, all faculty and staff can opt-in (or out) of these email groups. Preferences can be updated at https://mcommunity.umich.edu.
ITS will work to migrate other campus email groups that use the “umd.umich.edu” address to MCommunity later this year. There is no immediate action required at this time. A timeline currently is being developed and will be shared later this semester. There will be plenty of time to prepare for additional umd.umich.edu email migrations.
