Youth Programming at Osborn High School
The Office of Metropolitan Impact (OMI) is partnering with the Neighborhood Services Organization (NSO) and Osborn High School on Detroit’s east side. OMI is an NSO subcontractor on a U.S. Department of Labor grant awarded to NSO by the Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation to support and promote positive youth development, support attainment of a high school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) and encourage post-secondary education and career readiness.
Workshops and resources provided by the program are geared toward leadership development, work and career readiness, financial literacy, healthy and drug free lifestyle, peer-to-peer mentoring and violence prevention activities.
On a related front, OMI has a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA member helping to recruit young men of color from the Dearborn community as well as southwest Detroit to similar programming. These are examples of the many ways in which OMI is connecting and collaborating with community-based organizations throughout metro Detroit to provide comprehensive resources for youth to take steps toward higher education and job attainment.
Metro Detroit Nature Network
The Metro Detroit Nature Network Executive Committee has made significant progress in the last year. OMI played a critical role in the crafting of the network’s partnership agreement and is now helping to recruit members. As of our last meeting, the network has 15 member organizations with more signing on every week. With a focus on promoting citizen science, creating a career pipeline for youth in conservation, and conserving and creating green spaces, the network hopes its combined effort will catalyze collaborative conservation impact. Public Allies: Leadership Academy
Public Allies Metro Detroit (PAMD) is actively recruiting approximately 35 individuals for the second cohort of Leadership Academy. In this program, teams of young adults are paired with a nonprofit organization to support local community projects and programs. Participants receive extensive leadership development coaching and project management skills as well. The cohort will serve from late April through mid-September. In exchange for their service, scholars will receive a monthly stipend and an educational award of $3,000 after successful completion of the program. OMI is eager to see several UM-Dearborn students take part in this cohort and hopes many will take advantage of this opportunity.
The inaugural PAMD Leadership Academy scholars hosted their first event Saturday, March 18, in Rockwood, Mich. Saturday’s event was a poster contest for children living in the community served by the Rockwood Housing Commission. Twenty children created posters based on the theme “What Housing Means to Me.” The posters will be submitted to a state-wide competition.
